This entry will explain how to hack your LG RC199H DVD Player.

LG RC199H Hacks

I bought this "mostly" great" DVD player from Best Buy a few months ago after I started having trouble with my old Sony model. It has all kinds of great features like a DVD/VCR combo and reads 14 types of flash media including SD, mini-SD, xD, compact flash, memory stick, and much more. The disk media it support is: DVD, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, DVD+R DL, DVD RAM, CD, CD-R/RW, VCD, SVCD, WMA, MP3, JPEG, MPEG-4, DivX and XviD formats. It also sports video outputs over RF, component 480i - 480p, and HD 720p - 1080i - 1080p over HDMI. This is where I elaborate on the "mostly great" aspect of this player. If you have an analog HDTV (more explanation on this HERE) like I do you will have trouble taking full advantage of this DVD player because out of the box it only supports a digital HD signal over HDMI and no analog signal HD over component. Because of this I am posting these hacks of this player in hopes that someone can take the work I have done here and expand it to help me find the rest of the modifcations I need to make this work. What I am looking for is how to disable HDCP, Macrovision, and EDID which is supposed to allow me to transmit analog HD over component (more explanation on this HERE). I have included photos of the hacks below. If you click on them you will get a higher resolution for a better look. The hacks include changing region code to 0 and a seemingly partial disabling of Macrovision. If you can provide any more help please send me an email or post to this forum.

The shot above shows you how to enter into the hidden system information page which allows you to make changes to the DVD's internal configuration. Click the home button on the remote, goto the Setup page, highlight the 16X9 aspect ratio and enter in this coded sequence: 1 3 9 7 1 3 9

The shot above is what it looks like from the hidden system information page. Make sure that you document all data shown on this page just in case you make changes to your system and want to put things back the way they were before you started messing with your player. Take note of the region code and options 4 & 5. This region code is set to 1 which is United States and from my experimentation I believe that option 5 is directly tied to this value. Note the changes of region code when you modify option 5 according as in the shot below.

The region code change to 0 basically allows you to view any region coded disk in this player now without restricting you to just 1. I haven't tested this but would be curious to know if this really is the case. Also, if you notice the "MC GIT V19.3.0A" has dissappeared due to changes in option 4. I have speculated that this is tied to Macrovision Copyright but don't have conclusive proof of this. I still need to disable EDID and the HDCP which I think is tied to "CPRM KEY --- BSP" which I have guessed to mean Copyright Protection Recordable Meda which typically operates over the HDCP encryption. I'm hoping after fooling around with this configuration page with trial and error as I have already done thus far I will be able to figure out what the values mean for these options - maybe someone else will have a crack at it. If anyone knows how to drop this "KEY" in DVD configuration screen or how to disable the features I have mentioned I would really appreciate your feedback.
